For eight days, we had a city tour with family Goodridge through Berlin. Helene was born here 82 years ago, she met this handsome American soldier named George, they moved to the States&#8230; Now they returned for a visit with their three adult kids and in-laws.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.berlin-privateguide.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMGL2089-744x496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h4><strong>Allied history meets personal history<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p>We started in<strong> Grunewald Villa Colony<\/strong>, where Helene lived through the war until 1945. She moved to Wilmersdorf, we could actually step inside the house on Hildegardstrasse. Nearby is Helene&#8217;s Elementary School, and later, her work place was at Schlossstrasse in Steglitz. We had a break in the lake shore caf\u00e9 of <strong>Schlachtensee<\/strong> Lake, the place of their first meeting: this was where George first spoke to Helene&#8230;<\/p>\r\n<h4><strong>George was stationed in McNair Barracks<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p>in Zehlendorf, today a residential area. He stood guard on <strong>Albert Speer<\/strong> and other national socialist war criminals in <strong>Spandau Military Prison<\/strong>, of which only traces remain today. Just as back in 1959, Helene and George stepped into the <strong>American Chapel<\/strong> on Heerstrasse &#8211; they reenacted the wedding now, in 2018! By chance the current music director was there, and she sang &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; for them&#8230; We delved into cakes and tarts at Wiener Kaffeehaus on Roseneck. A visit to Helene&#8217;s mother&#8217;s grave on Wilmersdorf Cemetery was also part of the program.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Helene and George left Germany<\/h4>\r\n<p>flying out of <strong>Tempelhof Airport<\/strong> to the USA. And apart from all those family sites, we saw so many Berlin highlights! Our glorious final was the <strong>Family- Photo-Shooting<\/strong> with Karsten Thielker at the walk through B<strong>randenburg Gate<\/strong> and on top of the <strong>Reichstag<\/strong> parliament, with lunch right there at the rooftop restaurant. Such a city tour with a family is real fun!<\/p>\r\n<h4>You have a place in my heart, dear Goodridge family!<\/h4>\r\n<div id=\"js_2h\" class=\"_3058 _ui9 _hh7 _s1- _52mr _3oh-\" data-tooltip-content=\"26. September 00:12\" data-hover=\"tooltip\" data-tooltip-position=\"left\" aria-describedby=\"js_9\">\r\n<div tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"Janna, we loved the pictures!!! and greatly appreciated how quickly Karsten got them to us at the hotel. I bet it is just as beautiful in the Autumn as it is in the summer though i loved looking at all the beautiful terraces with the colorful flowers on them. I will still try to write something in your guestbook, say Hello to Karsten for me. Our photo shoot with Karsten on the last day was a extra special bonus \u2013 we loved the pictures!!! and greatly appreciated how quickly Karsten got them to us at the hotel\u2026 I have told my kids to start saving for the next trip tp my favorite city, Berlin.
